What you see in the following picture is the first shot of the all-new Durango's interior, and if its Jeep Grand Cherokee sister is anything to base judgments on, things should be pretty cozy inside the full-size Dodge.

The video description asks 'What happens when you put a Viper engine into a Chrysler 300?' and considering that this is pretty much a rhetorical question we're expecting the automaker to release some performance figures soon.

How do I know if my vehicle really needs new shock absorbers?

You need new shocks (and/or struts) if your original shocks (or struts) are worn out, damaged or leaking. Leaking is easy enough to see (just look for oil or wetness on the outside of the shock or strut) as is damage (broken mount, badly dented housing, etc.). But wear is often more of a subjective thing to judge. There are also instances where the original equipment shocks may not be worn, damaged or leaking, but may not be adequate for the job they're being asked to do. In such cases, upgrading the suspension with stronger, stiffer or some type of special shock (or strut) may be recommended to improve handling, for trailer towing, hauling overloads or other special uses.

Shocks and struts do not require replacing at specific mileage intervals like filters or spark plugs, but they do wear out and eventually have to be replaced. How long a set of original equipment shocks will last is anybody's guess. Some original equipment shocks may be getting weak after only 30,000 or 40,000 miles. Struts usually last upwards of 50,000 or 60,000 miles.

A "bounce test" is still a valid means of checking the dampening ability of shocks and struts. If the suspension continues to gyrate more than one or two times after rocking and releasing the bumper or body, your shocks or struts are showing their age and need to be replaced.

Either way you decide we want you to be safe and protect your investment. Weak shocks and struts won't necessarily create a driving hazards if you continue to drive on them, but there are studies that show worn shocks increase the distance it takes to stop a vehicle on a rough surface. Increased body sway due to weak shocks or struts can also increase the risk of skidding on wet or slick surfaces.

2011 Dodge Charger

Chrysler is showing off its next big renovation: the 2011 Dodge Charger. The fastback sedan gets its first makeover since being introduced.

The most distinctive change is the rounded "Coke bottle" sides and a new rear end and wraparound taillights, featuring 164 LEDs.

The new rear of the Dodge Charger features 164 LED lights in the tail.

The car keeps its sinister look, or at Chrysler Group calls it, the "attack-the-road face." Charger gets a lower hood line, canted windshield and radically raked back.

Chrysler offers new Mopar vehicle tracking system

A new accessory from Mopar, the Electronic Tracking System, will help owners of Chrysler Group LLC vehicles locate stolen vehicles and can alert parents if the teen who borrowed the car was speeding.

"Mopar's new tracking system provides vehicle owners the peace of mind that comes with always knowing where their vehicle is located," said Pietro Gorlier, chief executive of Mopar Service, Parts and Customer Care.

The $459 device, which fits in the palm of your hand, is mounted behind the dash so it is hidden. Once installed it acts as a GPS-enabled stolen vehicle recovery system that offers nationwide tracking.

The system is available for all Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Ram vehicles equipped with the necessary data port.

There is no subscription fee for the base plan that offers vehicle locator and tracking services and a $1,000 theft protection warranty that serves as a $1,000 deductible if the service cannot find your stolen car.

The services are similar to General Motors Co.'s OnStar system but Guidepoint operates via the owner's cell phone. OnStar's call system is imbedded in the vehicle.

2011 Chrysler Town & Country Gets Cool Features

Chrysler not only invented the concept of the garageable van with it’s original 1984 T-wagons – the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager - but it also invented the concept of the Premium soccer mom special with the Town & Country. Now 21 years after the T&C’s introduction it’s packed with an incredible array of standard features and for 2011 it gets even more. With safety being all the rage these days key elements on the new Town & Country include a Safety Tec umbrella, which brings together more than 40 separate standard features, including Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection.

Alongside safety; other improvements include a dual DVD system that can play two different media at the same time; Sirius Backseat TV and FLO TV (the latter which provides 20 channels of live programming); plus voice command functions for such things as iPod/MP3 players, radio control, phone communication and navigation.

Besides safety and gadgets, Chrysler has also made improvements to the interior – a new dash and instrument cluster; better quality upholstery for the seats; more ergonomically sound steering wheel with integrated vehicle functions and a revised HVAC system.

Under the hood the 2011 T&C also gets a version of Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter “Pentastar” V6, rated at 283 horsepower and 260 ft-lbs of torque. Combined with a six-speed automatic transmission EPA fuel economy estimates are 17 miles per gallon in town and 25 highway. Those fuel economy numbers are the same as last year, but the power output has jumped considerably. The 2011 T&C will be built exclusively at Chrysler’s Windsor, Ontario assembly plant, with the first examples set to arrive in dealerships, sometime in the final quarter of this year. Chrysler Group LLC has divulged complete details and images of its updated and affordable compact SUV, the 2011 Jeep Patriot. The new SUV, according to the automaker, offers customers several segment-leading capabilities and unsurpassed 4×4 fuel economy, along with classic, rugged Jeep styling.

Overhauling the styling for a more aggressive stance of the 2011 Jeep Patriot, the automaker adds to the vehicle a new front fascia with standard fog lamps positioned inside the headlamps, a new rear fascia that extends lower than on previous models, a body-color grille, new available 17-inch wheels, four new colors and a 4×4 ride height that has been increased by 1 inch.

The 2011 Jeep Patriot is offered with front-wheel- or four-wheel-drive, in three configurations of Sport, Latitude and Latitude X. The SUV is scheduled to arrive in Jeep showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Jeep is another car maker to take advantage of the iPhone as a marketing channel. Their app is called TripCast and it’s an app-service combo made for “Jeep fans and everyone with a sense of adventure.” You could think of it as some sort of a sport/exercise tracker app with an important difference – you better have cars to accomplish the “tasks” and/or visit places featured in TripCast.

Speaking of tasks, they are called “Points of Adventure” and there are 250,000 of them listed, including parks, bike paths, camping, ski resorts and more – all located in the United States. You can plan your trip either online (through this website) or from an iPhone and once that’s done, the plan can be imported (viewed) via Google Earth (if you want to do so).

As you visit those points of adventure, you can take photos, record video and audio clips and eventually compile an electronic scrapbook, which later on could be shared with friends via Twitter and Facebook.

Finally, there’s an option to make that adventure a “sounding one” by creating playlists and listening to music while using the TripCast.

As part of their efforts, the US brand is aggressively marketing both its Jeep and Dodge brands with a series of carefully-planned commercials to ensure consumers that the rough patches have passed, and that the company has come back better and stronger than ever before. As part of this campaign, Chrysler has released a number of commercials featuring the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the latest one being appropriately called, "Stronger".

In the ad, Chrysler details the painstaking lengths that go in building Jeep’s new flagship SUV while carefully pointing out the importance of the vehicle in the company’s attempt to restore the brand’s image and reputation. As the ad ever-so poignantly says, Chrysler isn’t "building just a car, it’s building a company."

2012 Dodge Durango Spy Shots

Just as Chrysler puts the finishing touches on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the spies at autoblog.com have captured its platform mate, the 2012 Dodge Durango/Magnum, out testing near the company's Auburn Hills, Michigan headquarters.

Not much has changed since the last time the new Dodge crossover was spied, but seeing the prototype running around near Chrysler HQ means that more of the swirly camouflage could be coming off in the next few months.

When the new Durango/Magnum officially launches next year, expect it to be available with Chrysler's new 3.6-liter V6 and possibly a 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The front end looks similar to that of the Ram pickup, and since the Ram brand has been spun off to house Dodge's truck offerings, don't be shocked if the new Durango falls under that umbrella. If development and testing continue at a steady pace, we'll likely get to see the finished product at either the 2010 Los Angeles or 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

Spy Shots: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

Once upon a time, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 laid claim to being the fastest SUV on the planet. It offered 0-60 times of under five seconds and a top speed in excess of 155 mph.

According to Motor Authority the prototype seen here was caught testing alongside a BMW X5 M SUV. Like the previous generation, the new SRT8 model will resemble the regular Grand Cherokee on which it’s based but will adopt a more aggressive design for its front fascia. A lowered ride height and beefier brakes will also feature.

Chrysler Unveils 2011 Jeep

Chrysler Group LLC- released images today of the new 2011 Jeep® Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited. Jeep continues to refine the successful Wrangler formula by combining its legendary, benchmark capability with an all-new interior that delivers rich styling with significantly upgraded touch surfaces, occupant comfort and versatility, and a premium appearance courtesy of an all-new body-color hard top for the popular Sahara model.

"The iconic Jeep Wrangler keeps getting better," said Mike Manley, President and CEO - Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "While retaining unmatched, legendary capability, the 2011 Jeep Wrangler boasts an all-new interior that delivers a host of comfort, convenience and versatility features. In addition, Sahara models now feature a stunning, all-new body-color hard top, for customers looking for a Jeep Wrangler with a more premium appearance."

New 2011 Jeep Wrangler interior highlights include a redesigned instrument panel and new storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. A new lockable console and upgraded door armrest areas boast comfortable touch points, while a redesigned center stack is easier to reach and operate. Heated, power mirrors are now available, and drivers and passengers will enjoy enhanced visibility courtesy of larger rear windows.

All-new steering-wheel controls allow the driver to operate the radio, cruise control, hands-free phone and other vehicle functions while keeping hands on the wheel. A new USB device interface connects to storage devices (thumb drives and most MP3 players) for use with the vehicle’s Media Center, which now includes streaming Bluetooth audio. Twelve-volt accessory outlets have been added and a new 110-volt outlet is available to provide power similar to AC outlets in the home.

Jeep engineers increased acoustical treatment in the 2011 Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited, resulting in significantly reduced interior noise.

To provide a more premium appearance, the 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited Sahara models boast an all-new, premium, body-color hard top.

Several new Jeep Wrangler colors are available for 2011, including Detonator Yellow, Deep Cherry Red, Sahara Tan, Cosmos Blue and Bright White.

Production of the new 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited began earlier this week at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.

Texas shoppers get a break from state and local sales taxes on August 20, 21 and 22 - the state's annual tax holiday. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.

As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Backpacks under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students are also exempt. A backpack is a pack with straps one wears on the back. The exemption during the sales tax holiday includes backpacks with wheels, provided they can also be worn on the back like a traditional backpack, and messenger bags. The exemption does not include items that are reasonably defined as luggage, briefcases, athletic/duffle/gym bags, computer bags, purses or framed backpacks. Ten or fewer backpacks can be purchased tax-free at one time without providing an exemption certificate to the seller.

School Supplies
The 81st Texas Legislature passed HB 1801 (2009) expanding the list of items qualifying for exemption from Texas state and local sales and use taxes during the annual sales tax holiday in August. In addition to clothes, footwear and some backpacks, Texas families also get a sales tax break on most school supplies priced at less than $100 purchased for use by a student in an elementary or secondary school.

2011 Ram Outdoorsman News

When Chrysler asked Ram Truck customers – boaters, campers, fishing enthusiasts and hunters – what features would they like to see in a truck. They answered 'more capability, more room for my gear and ready to hit the trail. And make it affordable.'"

So said Fred Diaz, the President and CEO of Chrysler's Ram Truck Brand.

And apparently, he's not just blowing smoke. Chrysler's internal research suggests that 62 percent of fullsize pickup truck owners hunt, fish or camp. The automaker's response to these apparent needs is the new 2011 Ram Outdoorsman.

Functional upgrades include standard trailer towing accommodations, limited-slip differential, 17-inch wheels with off-highway-ready tread pattern tires, underbody protection, tow hooks, halogen head lamps and fog lights.

In order to set the truck apart from its siblings, the Outdoorsman will get a two-tone paint scheme with Mineral Gray on the lower portion, wheel lip moldings and, of course, appropriate compass-themed badges.

No matter what configuration you order – 1500, 2500 or 3500; Regular Cab, Quad Cab, Crew Cab or Mega Cab; four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive etc. – Ram promises that the Outdoorsman will be available towards the end of the year, and it will be a replacement for the old TRX4 trim level. Pricing will begin at $28,350 including destination.

2012 Chrysler 300's Spy Pictures

We at Planet DCJ found what could be the greatest improvements to the Chrysler 300.

This picture found on autoblog.com shows the next Chrysler 300 with some chiseling and wedging applied to its current stoic proportions.

The photo shows how the perfectly horizontal shoulder line now sweeps up from a lower front end into a shorter decklid. The nearly perpendicular front and rear on the 2010 have also been reshaped, particularly in the rear. Detail-wise, only the mirrors appear to have carried over, with what looks like new headlight hardware in an angled design, LED taillights in back, an integrated exhaust treatment and new rear window glass.

Avenger Spy Shot

We've yet to glean any hard facts about what Chrysler has planned for an Avenger/Sebring replacement.

While a few scant rumors have cropped up that hint to the possibility of a partnership with Nissan, we simply haven't heard anything substantial. You'll find few souls out there who argue that the malaise twins aren't in serious need of some updating, and judging from a handful of spy shot nabbed by the crew at Secret New Cars, it may be awhile before we see any significant changes to the chassis as a whole. For now, it appears that Chrysler is hoping the rental car buying public will be satisfied with just a nose job.

The shots show a heavily camouflaged mule with its entire schnoz wrapped in disguising fabric. That leads us to believe that the next iteration will feature a completely new front fascia, possibly with new fenders and a hood to boot. I know that sometimes things suddenly happen to your car. It can be frustrating. Your sunroof is no exception so how do you fix it when it goes wrong? It can be a hassle trying to figure out how to fix the problem. Well thanks to Online Auto Repair we found tips and hints on how to take care of a broken down sun roof. Many malfunctions in the sunroof system fall into 2 categories that can often be related to each-other. Water leak issues and electrical problems. Sometimes wiring or switch corrosion can be caused by the water leaks.

A power sunroof can slide the roof panel open or closed. You can also tilt the roof panel up in the back to allow fresh air into the passenger compartment. When driving down the road this can also pull a vacuum and remove stale air from the interior cabin.

In most cases power sunroofs are not that much different than electrically operated power window systems found in most automobiles. Many common parts are shared such as system relays, a master control switch and the motor assembly to perform the movement.

Note that most power sunroof systems are protected by a circuit breaker instead of a fuse. This is in case the sunroof begins to bind. It protects the motor by opening the circuit breaker. Often when people have power sunroof problems they will begin to look for the fuse when there is actually none. A circuit breaker will reset automatically when it cools down.

Power sunroof common problems

Often power sunroofs are a popular option that does not get used very often. When this system sits for months or years without being used often components can develop corrosion that may hinder operation when it is finally desired.

Since a sunroof is part of the exterior surface of the vehicle a complete watertight seal is necessary. If this seal fails or the automatic drain becomes clogged with debris and water sits around the components the corrosion mentioned above will be accelerated. For this reason a very common sunroof problem is water sealing and drainage.

Diagnosing power sunroof problems is pretty straightforward. The first thing to check would be the circuit breaker. Next you would want to verify power at the motor connector. In that case you would be working from the load back towards the battery. If there is no power at the motor you can break out a wiring diagram and do some pinpoint checks at the relay and switch.

Administrators of the official Jeep Facebook page posted a status update yesterday instructing fans to submit their personal Jeep photos to Flickr instead of Facebook. While this move by Jeep seems counterintuitive, the American manufacturer apparently had so many photos being uploaded by fans they exceeded Facebook’s photo album size for Photos by Others with 20,000 total photos. Instead of asking fans to stop submitting photos, they are sending fans to Flickr for photo uploads while Facebook “fixes the glitch”.

A reader from the Top Speed Blog was able to catch a glimpse of the back end of the 2011 Dodge Charger. According to the Top Speed Blog, the reader was able to catch the muscle car taking a break from its testing in Florida and, although it is still bandaged up, you could still see some revised taillights and some hid headlights. The reader was able to take a peek on the inside and that revealed a unique two-tone leather interior that he said “looked upscale for a Dodge.”

Insideline reported yesterday that Chrysler LLC has announced the launch of the 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T “Mopar ‘10” edition.

The vehicle has been actually created to celebrate the collaboration between the carmaker and its aftermarket parts supplier. Also the vehicle will only be produced in a limited amount. That amount is said to be around 500 units.

All the Mopar Dodge Challengers will carry the same 5.7 liter Hemi V8 and will have a choice of three accent colors of blue, red and silver stripes.

What’s interesting is that the company hasn’t released any image of the Dodge Mopar ‘10 Challenger, only offering a sketch of the exclusive muscle car.

Two Jeep Wranglers recently set a new world record for high altitude climbing in South America. The two Jeeps scaled the Ojos del Salado mountain range in Chile.

It is officially the highest climb by an internal combustion. The two Jeeps climbed 21,804 feet above sea level, allowing them to set the record of the highest altitude ever reached by a 4x4.

Dodge Challenger Stock Car to Make Debut at Daytona

Although it was short-lived, the first-generation Dodge Challenger has some racing history as a Trans Am car, and now the new generation retro muscle car is coming back to the track. The Challenger body style will officially make its race debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series tomorrow evening at the Daytona International Speedway.

Although we first saw Dodge's new Challenger stock car last fall, the new car will finally hit the track for real tomorrow evening in the Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona. The Challenger, much like Ford's new Mustang stock car, will compete in four Car of Tomorrow events scheduled during the 2010 Nationwide season. Both Justin Allgaier (#12) and Brad Keselowski (#22) are set to pilot Challengers in tomorrow's race.

"Our new Challenger race car brings true identity back to NASCAR," Ralph Gilles, Dodge's brand president, said in a prepared statement. "We've been looking forward to this race weekend for quite some time, and our loyal owners and fans are going to have a lot of opportunities to celebrate the return of the Challenger."

As part of the celebration, Dodge will host nearly 100 Challengers -- and their owners -- during the race weekend in Daytona, including Saturday's Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400 race. The automaker will hold several activities to keep fans entertained throughout the weekend, but we imagine true gearheads will be preoccupied by watching a new generation of muscle car wars unfold upon the banked oval.

Jeep's 2011 Grand Cherokee is among a growing number of vehicles to use four-wheel-drive systems with terrain-specific settings. Land Rover has had it. Ford's 2011 Explorer later this year is to have it.

Turn the knob to match the challenge. The vehicle's brain box is supposed to alter settings of the traction control, stability control, transmission, throttle control and the like so you have a better chance of getting through.

Trigger the hill-descent feature, too, and you reduce the downhill
Selec-Terrain knob lets you tailor the four-wheel-drive system to the terrain you face. Or, set it to pucker factor dramatically. Every hill looks steeper from behind the wheel, so a confidence-inspiring speed limiter is welcome. In our tests, the Grand Cherokee's worked better than any downhill control in memory. A full report on the new Jeep is in this week's Test Drive column.

Grand Cherokee, $31,000 and up, is just now rolling into dealers and will be widely available within weeks. The Jeep links what it calls Selec-Terrain to other features to fine-tune your slogging. If you get the optional Quadra-Lift air suspension (two buttons to the right of the terrain knob shown in the photo here), you can add 2.6 inches more ground clearance (for 10.7 in. total), subtract 1.5 in. when parking to make it easier to get in and out, or pick an in-between adjustment.

Chrysler Group is putting your new car's owners manual on your smartphone. The maker of Chryslers, Jeeps and Dodges says it's the first big automaker to do it.

Last year, Chrysler Group replaced traditional, bulky owner manuals with DVDs and user guides. That was a space-saving idea, given that owners manuals have grown to 1,000 pages sometimes, but most people don't carry around a DVD player.

Now, in addition to general vehicle information including vehicle operation, maintenance and warranty, this new app offers product-feature video demonstrations, connections with fellow owners via the company's brands on social media sites, and access to customer care and 24-hour road-side assistance, the company says.

The new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, coming to showrooms now, will be the first to get it.

"With our vehicle-information app, we are taking customer care to a new level by creating a convenient, on-demand channel of communication with our customers," said Pietro Gorlier, CEO of Mopar, Chrysler's part subsidiary.

A 1999 Rolls Royce Silver Seraph valued at a quarter million dollars can be had for a mere $78,900. A few Porsche 911s are also housed in the gallery, with the prices ranging from $31,900 to $63,900. The closest thing to a clunker is a 1971 Fiat in excellent condition. That'll cost $9,900.

Anyone can tell the gallery is home to a fleet of exotic automobiles, which is why the guy who had just hauled a jet black Jeep more than 800 miles was confused as to why he was dropping it off there. The SUV was nothing special, with some small tears in the upholstery, a bit of rust on the exterior and 133,000 miles on the odometer.

"You got a lot of nice cars here," the driver told one of the employees. "Why do you want a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?"

First of all, it wasn't for the proprietors of the car gallery. It was for a client who wanted the car stored in a safe, climate-controlled setting. Second, the car's previous owner is President Barack Obama, who was a state senator when he racked up 80,000 miles on the Jeep.

John Reznikoff had been waiting nearly two weeks for the Jeep to arrive from Illinois since he won it in an auction in New Jersey. The price came to $26,437.50 -- nearly eight times its listed value. As a man who's literally made a living off of historic artifacts, he was willing to spend a significant amount more to acquire the president's family vehicle.

Also, the humble beginnings of Obama resonated with Reznikoff.
"It shows you that anybody can be president one day," he said. "You can be driving in a Jeep one day and be president the next."
Reznikoff hasn't driven the car yet since it's unregistered, but the engine still hums and the air conditioning works, although the key sticks a little bit in the ignition.
"I bet he had to deal with that, too," Reznikoff said.
Living with history

Buying the Jeep was no lark for Reznikoff. He's been scooping up historical artifacts for more than three decades as the founder of University Archives, a Westport-based company devoted to documents, furniture and just about anything else that has historical value and can net a profit.

The Wilton resident has a network of people who scour auction listings throughout the country, but he was tipped off about the Jeep by the person running the auction. It joins his prized collection of letters written by George Washington, Ronald Reagan's rocking chair and Ernest Hemingway's typewriter, to name a few.

Recently, Reznikoff was offered the vehicles that were used in the television show "Lost," but he decided not to get them because the show simply doesn't have the long-term appeal of presidential history.

The crown jewel of his collection is an immaculately restored 1963 Lincoln Continental convertible.

On Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy rode the white-colored convertible from his hotel in Forth Worth, Texas, to the airport. Less than an hour after Kennedy landed in Dallas, he was assassinated. Reznikoff purchased the car for $17,500 in 1998. After putting about $100,000 toward restoration, the car is now available for $1.3 million. Any takers?

He's already had a seven figure offer, but he's holding out until the 50th anniversary of the assassination to see how high a price the car can fetch. That's also when the first of his four sons will be attending college.

"Half the time they think I'm nuts," Reznikoff said. "Half the time they think it's the coolest job."
His career began as a hobby. He collected baseball cards as a kid, and eventually got into stamp collecting. After some stints as a short-order cook, a mover and a lifeguard, he transformed his passion into an occupation.

Filling in the blanks

In 2000, President Barack Obama was State Sen. Barack Obama, D-13. When he wasn't in the legislature, he was a senior lecturer at Chicago Law School and a counselor at a law firm.
As his political star was rising, his family was growing. His first daughter was born in 1998 -- Reznikoff can picture the baby seat in the car. In 2001, Obama's second daughter was born. In 2004, he sold the Jeep to a used-car dealership.

With history so close and accessible to Reznikoff, he takes a great interest in learning about the events and the time period behind his possessions. He also tries to learn about the icon from the objects they owned.

As he sat in the driver's seat -- the engine wasn't running -- he looked toward the center console.
"I bet he got a lot of use out of that ash tray," he speculated.

After Obama got rid of the Jeep, an executive assistant in Naperville, Ill., bought the car after the dealer pointed out the name on the title and said, "He might be president some day," according to a story in the Wall Street Journal. She reportedly paid $15,000.

Right now, Reznikoff plans to hold on to the Jeep and see what prices the market dictates. He's open to offers, and he anticipates this is something that people will be especially interested in when the president's term draws to a close.

Ever since Chrysler separated the Ram truck lineup from the Dodge brand, it has been challenged to distinguish the two marques, with questionable progress. Chrysler's latest move is to separate the well-recognized ram's horns from the Dodge line and adopt a new logo.

Dodge is positioned as Chrysler's sport, youth-oriented brand, according to the Auburn Hills-based automaker, and it needs to accentuate it. To start, the two red slashes from the Street and Racing Technology group are now Dodge's own insignia.

"It signifies our sporty character," said Ralph Gilles, Dodge brand CEO. "Most SRTs are Dodges."The dual red slashes are set at an angle and will represent Dodge on dealer signage, ads, merchandise, owner's manuals, and other promotional products. The twin slashes, however, will not make it onto any future Dodge vehicles. As the ram's horns are eliminated from the line, the Dodge lineup will receive the new badge with the proceeding generation in the cycle. The first offerings with the new emblem will be the next-gen Charger and the still-unnamed, Durango-replacing, Jeep Grand Cherokee platform-sharing crossover with seven seats.The Ram brand, comprised of the Ram 1500, Ram Heavy Duty, Ram chassis cabs, and midsize Dakota, will continue to sport the ram's horns.

Chrysler Sebring replacement to be named Nassau - Report

According to a recent report, the facelifted Chrysler Sebring will be called Nassau, named after the 2007 concept that debut in Detroit.

While details are limited, the Nassau will feature new exterior styling and an improved interior. The base 173 hp (129 kW / 175 PS) 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine will carry over, but the 235 hp (175 kW / 238 PS) 3.5-liter V6 will be replaced by the 280 hp (209 kW / 284 PS) 3.6-liter Pentastar V6.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 6 -- To celebrate the final year of production for the current-generation Dodge Viper, Dodge is building a limited production run of just 50 2010 Viper SRT10 "Final Edition" models.

Available in Coupe, Roadster and ACR (American Club Racer) model configurations, each Final Edition Viper exterior features a Graphite Clear Coat body with a painted black center stripe traced in red. Viper Coupe and ACR Final Edition models include a black windshield surround. All Final Edition models carry unique side sill badges.

The black interior features custom red accent stitching, red painted halo surrounds on the gauge cluster and bright stainless steel screws in center stack bezel. A numbered dash plaque (1-50) is located on the shifter bezel just above the unique Viper Final Edition floor mats.

All Viper Final Edition Coupe and Roadster models will wear six-spoke wheels painted in Anthracite, while ACR models will come with five-spoke Sidewinder wheels in black.

Chrysler on track to break even on an operating basis in 2010

CEO Sergio Marchionne said that Chrysler Group holds more than $5 billion in cash and is on course to break even on an operating basis in 2010.

Marchionne was speaking at the National Automobile Dealers Association/IHS Global Insight Automotive Forum in New York before the city’s annual auto show. Marchionne serves as the chief executive of both Chrysler and Fiat S.p.A., which operates Chrysler. He added that the analysts’ estimate of the company’s breakeven point had been higher than its actual figure. Marchionne said that the company is producing cash and has continued to invest in the brand portfolio. He said that he feels “more comfortable” now than he did a year ago “by far.”

2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8

The Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the fastest vehicle in the Jeep lineup: a different kind of animal than what the brand is known for. Chrysler’s street racing engineers utilized four-wheel drive to enhance power as opposed to off-road handling, delivering a zero-to-sixty time under five seconds.

Special ground effects limit the SRT8 model to paved roads. I had difficulty backing out of my driveway without hitting the front fascia, designed to enhance airflow, on the apron. Twenty-inch forged aluminum wheels come with run-flat tires can run up to fifty miles with no air pressure on the highway. The tires eliminate weight from a spare, but are completely impractical off-road.

Having said that, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 fits most of the other squares active buyers need to fill. It can hold up to five passengers, has a large enough cargo area to hold a bicycle, and tows up to 3500 pounds, meeting our minimum ALV standards.

Best of all, the hot rod Grand Cherokee is a hoot to drive. While Jeep enthusiasts will immediately see differences in appearance between the stock Grand Cherokee and its SRT cousin, most drivers cannot. There’s nothing more fun than pulling up next to a pony car at a stoplight, and blowing it away off the line. I found the stunt so entertaining that I had to repeat it half a dozen times during my test drive.

Base price on the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is $43,325, not including a $780 destination charge.

Four hundred twenty horses smelling the barn

At the heart of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a 420-horsepower hemi engine. The engine produces peak torque of 420 foot pounds at 4800 rpm, giving it excellent acceleration off the line. A five-speed automatic transmission includes manual gear selection to add some fun on twisting roads.

A cat-back exhaust system that includes two, four-inch exhaust pipes helps to push air through the engine. The exhaust lets out a pleasing belch during hard acceleration: the car’s way of saying “thank you” for the 91-octane gasoline it requires.

Since the Grand Cherokee is engineered strictly for on-road use, the four-wheel drive system utilizes a single-speed transfer case. Four-wheel drive enhances vehicle performance on slippery roads by automatically sending engine power to the wheels with the best traction. The twenty-inch wheels and low-profile tires give the Grand Cherokee an exceptionally large, stable footprint.

The suspension is surprisingly refined, considering that the Grand Cherokee’s live rear axle. Monotube shock absorbers and large stabilizer bars on both axles keep the chassis flat in the corners. I took some decreasing radius turns at highway speeds, as well as on a two-lane road outside of town, and was impressed by how well the Grand Cherokee responded.

Steering feedback from the rack-and-pinion system is excellent. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 maintains positive on-center response at speed, while providing plenty of low-speed assist for maneuvering around parking lots. Its 37.1-foot turning radius is pretty good, considering the car’s long wheelbase.

Visibility is quite good to the front and sides. Over-the-shoulder visibility, in particular, is excellent. A rearview camera eliminates blind spots to the back of the vehicle, making it easier to parallel park. The rearview camera is part of an option package that also adds navigation, remote start, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a special instrument cluster with performance pages and adjustable pedals ($2045).

Seating for five passengers

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Interior

The Grand Cherokee can hold up to five passengers, though legroom in the second-row center position is limited due to the center console. The SRT team installed heavily bolstered seats up front to keep the driver and passenger in place. Unfortunately, the seats have terrible lower lumbar support. I found it uncomfortable to sit in the car for more than an hour.

Adjustable pedals and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel allow smaller drivers to maintain a safe distance from the front airbag and a clear forward view. Two-position seat memory makes it easier for multiple drivers to share the car. The driver can access performance pages using steering wheel controls. They include quarter mile time, zero-to-sixty acceleration, and average fuel economy. I averaged 13.7 miles-per-gallon on the test drive: slightly higher than the EPA estimate.

Overhead reading lamps for both rows of passengers and a dome light in the cargo area illuminate the interior at night. All passengers have ample access to map pockets and cupholders. There are two, 12-volt power points in the center stack, and one in the cargo area. A 115-volt outlet behind the center console allows rear passengers to plug in games or a computer.

Second-row seats have enough head, leg and hip room for smaller adults, though legroom in the middle position is fairly limited. Passengers with limited mobility may have a hard time climbing in back, since the rear wheel arches impinge on the door opening.

An option on the test car adds an audio upgrade with a large subwoofer in the cargo area. The sound is great, but the component makes it harder to load in large cargo, especially bicycles.

Without the upgrade, the cargo area functions well for active lifestyles. The driver can open the rear glass separately for loading in smaller items. Lift-over height is pretty good for a SUV, making easier to load in large cargo. A small storage area under the cargo floor keeps valuables hidden from sight.

Standard safety

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes standard with front, side and side curtain airbags, traction and electronic stability control. Four-piston Brembo brakes with four-channel antilock braking stop the car on a dime.

Chrysler’s five year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty includes 24-hour roadside assistance. Chrysler builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee at its Detroit, Michigan assembly plant.

Likes: A full-sized sport-utility vehicle with the handling and performance of a sport sedan, plus a spacious cargo area. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is bicycle friendly and can tow up to 3500 pounds, meeting our ALV minimum standards.

Dislikes: No off-road capability. Limited legroom in the middle, second-row seat.

The 2010 Chrysler Town & Country delivers the minivan segment's highest levels of luxury and refinement, and now delivers segment-exclusive active safety features across the lineup with the new SafetyTec package. The new package raises the bar in the minivan segment with segment-first innovations including BSM and RCP accident-avoidance systems. Additional features include Parksense® rear-park assist, Parkview® rear back-up camera (available with Media Center™ 430 touchscreen radio), rain-sensing windshield wipers, mirrors with integrated turn-signal lamps and BSM/RCP indicators and an Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with Tire-pressure Monitoring (TPM). Active head restraints (AHR)
AHR move forward and upward in the event of a rearward, rear-end collision to decrease the space between the headrest and the occupant's head, thereby helping to reduce the chance of injury.

Air bags (multi-stage)
Regulates the amount of air bag necessary for the front passengers by crash severity.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
Senses and prevents wheel lockup, offering improved steering control under extreme braking and/or slippery conditions.

Auto headlamps
Selectable headlight setting that uses a sensor to detect exterior light and turns on headlights automatically.

Auto-reverse windows or door
Automatically reverses the direction of a power window or door (to the down or open position) when an obstruction exists.

BeltAlert
Periodically activates a chime and illuminates an icon in the instrument cluster to remind the driver to buckle up if a vehicle is driven without being properly belted.

Brake assist
In a panic-brake condition, the system applies maximum braking power, providing the shortest possible stopping distance.

Brake/park interlock
Prevents an automatic transmission or transaxle from being shifted out of Park unless the brake pedal is applied.

Child seat anchor system
ISOFIX is designed to ease installation of compatible aftermarket child seats.

Child-protection rear-door locks
Disables the rear doors' inside-release handle via a small lever on the door-shut face.

Constant-force Retractors (CFR)
Seat belt retractor senses vehicle impact and immediately applies a load to the seat belt in order to properly position the occupant before the full load of the vehicle impact is imparted onto the occupant. It then reduces the seat-belt load in order to moderate forces imparted onto the occupant during the impact event.

Door alert
Selectable feature that automatically flashes signal lights on the side of the vehicle in which a sliding door is opening (minivan).

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
Adjusts braking pressure front to rear, based on weight distribution of passengers and cargo in order to minimize brake dive during hard braking.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Enhances driver control and helps maintain directional stability under all conditions. Provides the greatest benefit in critical driving situations such as turns, and is especially valuable when driving on mixed-surface conditions such as snow, ice or gravel. If there's a discernible difference between what the driver asks through the steering wheel and the vehicle's path, ESC applies selective braking and throttle input in order to guide the vehicle back onto the driver's intended path.

Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS)
Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on interior lighting, flashing hazard lamps and unlocking doors after air-bag deployment. Also shuts off the flow of fuel to the engine.

Height-adjustable seat belts
Allows occupants to raise and lower the shoulder belt. This system encourages seat-belt usage by offering a more comfortable fit.

High-intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps
Provide approximately three times the light output of conventional reflector lamps for improved nighttime illumination.

HomeLink universal transceiver
Stores three separate transmitter radio-frequency codes to operate garage-door openers, security gates, security lighting or other radio-controlled devices.

Interior head-impact protection
Interior pillars above the beltline and instrument panel, including areas around the windshield and rear-window headers, roof and side-rail structures, and shoulder-belt turning loops specifically designed to limit head-impact force.

Knee bolsters
The lower instrument panel and the glove box door are designed to properly position the occupant, enabling air bags to work effectively.

Rain-sensing wipers
A driver convenience feature that automatically senses moisture on the windshield and activates wipers.

Rear-interior conversation mirror
A convex mirror located in the overhead console above the inside rearview mirror allows the driver to see rear-seat occupants without turning and looking back.

Seat-belt pretensioners
During a collision, impact sensors initiate front seat-belt pretensioners in order to immediately remove slack, thereby reducing the forward movement of occupants' heads and torsos.

Sentry Key® engine immobilizer
Utilizes an engine key that has an embedded transponder with a pre-programmed security code to discourage vehicle theft. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the controller sends a random number to the transponder, and the engine is allowed to start. If an incorrect key is used, the engine will shut off after a few seconds.

SmartBeam® headlamps
Intelligent headlamp system adjusts to ambient light and oncoming traffic in order to deliver maximum lighting.

Smart Brake
Chrysler Group began implementing the smart brake in 2003. When a disagreement exists between the throttle and the brake, the brake signal causes the engine controller to reduce engine power, allowing the operator to stop the car.

Supplemental side-curtain air bags
Extend protection to all outboard front- and rear-seat passengers, including third-row outboard passengers in vehicles so equipped. The system includes sensors, adjacent to both front-and rear-seat occupants, which are calibrated to deploy the side airbag and curtain during impacts that require air bag occupant protection.

Tire-pressure Monitoring (TPM)
Informs driver when tire pressure is too low. Pressure-sensor modules within valve stems of all four road wheels send continuous radio-frequency signals to a receiver and the system.

Traction Control System (TCS)
Helps to keep driving wheels from spinning during acceleration from a stop or during slow speeds by applying individual brakes alone or in combination with engine torque limitation to prevent wheel slip.

Uconnect™ Phone
In-vehicle, voice-activated communication system that allows you to talk on your Bluetooth compatible phone with your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The built-in phonebook sync feature automatically downloads as many as 1,000 phone book entries from supported phones, which can then be selected by simply saying their name.

Voice Command
Chrysler Group LLC's hands-free voice recognition system helps drivers keep their eyes on the road. Many features are operable using Voice Command®, including navigation destinations. Voice Command is standard with Uconnect Phone.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.
“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”

The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.

The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.

IRS also alerted taxpayers that the vehicle must be purchased after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.

The special deduction is available regardless of whether a taxpayer itemizes deductions on their return. The IRS reminded taxpayers the deduction may not be taken on 2008 tax returns.

Chrysler takes steps in quality
Executive works on team approach to get everyone on same page; results are encouraging.

The first thing Doug Betts did when he arrived at Chrysler LLC in October 2007 to oversee quality was define the term so everyone would be on the same page to fix problems.

The Auburn Hills automaker had not scored well in quality surveys, which has been costly in terms of lost sales.

Betts noted similarities to problems he encountered as a troubleshooter at Nissan Motor Co. following poor product launches in 2003. Months of brainstorming at Nissan became Chrysler's gain, as Betts said he knew within days of arriving what needed to be done at Chrysler.

"The people at Chrysler were very open to trying something different," said Betts, an engineer who spent a decade at Toyota Motor Corp. before Nissan.

There are roughly the same number of people working on quality at Chrysler today, but they are organized in 18 cross-functional teams of about eight people each, instead of by department.

The teams are organized around parts of the car with goals to fix problems immediately. Time is not wasted arguing over whose problem it is, he said.

There are signs Betts' changes are working. Chrysler recalled the fewest vehicles among the six major automakers last year, 361,065, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford Motor Co. recalled 1.6 million vehicles, General Motors Corp. 1.8 million, Honda Motor Co. almost 800,000 and Toyota Motor Corp. 833,000. Chrysler was the No. 4 automaker in the United States last year, selling 1.5 million vehicles, behind GM, Toyota and Ford.

Chrysler's recall performance last year marked an improvement over 2007, when the automaker recalled 576,418 vehicles, more than GM and just shy of Toyota's tally.

Also, according to Chrysler's internal data, the number of warranty claims after three months' ownership improved 21 percent in the last four months of 2008, contributing to a 30 percent improvement last year compared to 2007. For consumers, that means almost a third fewer visits to the dealer for repairs, Betts said. For Chrysler, it reduced warranty costs by $240 million in 2008.

But Chrysler, battling to survive amid the worst sales downturn in the U.S. auto industry in decades, still has to convince consumers it builds better vehicles than it used to.

"Perception will lag the improvement for a long time, even if they are making strides," said Stephanie Brinley, product analyst with AutoPacific in Troy. "It takes two (product) life cycles for consumers to truly understand there is a difference."

Betts is quick to acknowledge that consumers rely on third-party evaluations such as Consumer Reports' reliability reviews, which rate automakers against the industry average, and that Chrysler has consistently failed to meet the industry average. For the 2008 model year, Chrysler vehicles were "quite a bit worse," said Betts, who came into the job knowing quality has recently been Chrysler's Achilles heel.

Early indications from testing the 2009 Dodge Ram, one of the company's flagship vehicles, show improved quality, especially for interior materials, which "are much higher grade and look better," said Jonathan Linkov, managing editor of autos at Consumer Reports.

But similar upgrades are needed across the lineup, he said, especially extending to bread-and-butter vehicles such as the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger midsize cars and the smaller Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass and Patriot, which were launched with hard plastic interiors and poorly placed panel gaps.

"They are a good example of bad interior execution," Linkov said, although he acknowledged improvements to the Jeep interiors for 2009.

Linkov noted that poor quality vehicles were launched during Daimler AG's ownership of Chrysler but quality has improved since Cerberus Capital Management LP assumed a majority share of Chrysler in 2007.

They are still not Toyota quality, but are better than past Chrysler products, Linkov said.

The question now is whether Chrysler's limited resources -- the automaker is trying to stave off bankruptcy by cutting costs and relying on federal loans -- will be directed at new products or to redo existing ones, Linkov said.

Consumers Reports makes recommendations based on a three-year window of reliability, so Betts knows there won't be any grand declarations after one good year.

But he is confident things will continue to improve.

"Every month for the next few months," he said, "I'm going to be saying we've set a new warranty record."
